"Persistent world" refers to the notion that changes made by players in an MMORPG are kept in the game even after these players have exited the game, as massively multiplayer online games do not pause. "Worlds" can have different meanings in MMORPGs, from a geographical area of Earth to galaxies.

However, some offline games somewhat emulate this feature through NPC behaviour taking into account past events (such as in single player campaigns), or by taking place real-time like Animal Crossing.
